Have you ever bought a card specifically because it reminded you of something?
Posted by kyberforged on September 27, 2026 at 7:17 pmMaybe a player you watched growing up, a movie/show, a particular game, a childhood memory, or even just artwork that brought something back. For me it’s the recent addition of Darkwing Duck to card sets.
I think those cards can end up meaning way more than the ones we bought strictly because they were “good investments.”
What’s one card in your collection that has that kind of connection?

I have a Sean Elliott card that I bought specifically because I remember watching the Memorial Day Miracle (look it up for a sweet watch)

That’s a perfect example of why I think “why you bought it” can matter more than the card itself. You’re not just buying a Sean Elliott card, you’re buying a little piece of something you remember watching happen.

I do this all the time. Not just with cards, but with anything I collect. Most times it will be something that reminds me of my wife, kids, parents, or something from my youth.
Speaking of, I need to go find an Alex Trebek Card for my PC to remind my of my son….

That’s honestly one of my favorite things about collecting. The card itself might not be worth a ton, but if it immediately takes you back to a person or a specific time in your life, it becomes priceless to you.

I was going through some non sports cards and found a couple Tom and Jerry cards and it reminded me of watching cartoons as a kid and had to get them. Surprisingly they were actually worth something. I’ll keep an eye out for more.

That’s the best kind of accidental PC pickup. You see something that takes you straight back to being a kid, grab it for the nostalgia, and then find out afterward that it actually has some value. Tom and Jerry are definitely one of those characters where I’d probably start looking for more once I had a couple. There are so many cool non-sport sets from that era too.

I didn’t even know they existed haha I will be in the hunt now! Now I wonder what else could be out there! Like you said a lot of fun non sport from that era.

Haha exactly! Once you start going down that rabbit hole, you realize there was SO much cool non-sport stuff being made. 😂 I recently found some of the old Topps Simpsons cards and they immediately caught my attention. They have that perfect 90s/early-2000s nostalgia factor, and the artwork on some of them is awesome. Now I’m looking at those the same way you’re looking at the Tom and Jerry cards… “well, I guess I collect these now.” 😂
