Prospecting! Pros and Cons…
Since re-joining the hobby about 2 years ago, I’ve found myself gravitating towards collecting baseball prospects. I enjoy doing the research and rooting for players as they progress in their careers over months and years. I like the fact that I can use some asymmetric knowledge to buy low and (hopefully) sell high.
One of my big questions when re-entering the hobby was why a Bowman 1st Auto for recent prospects (Konnor Griffin, Kevin McGonigle, etc.) were $250+, while a Bowman 1st Auto for a proven, All-Star caliber player like Trea Turner can be had for only $40. I still don’t have a great answer for this, other than the fact that it’s all driven by the hype cycle, and that none of these prices are sustainable in the long-term.
For those who have been prospecting for much longer than I have, what are some of your biggest “lessons learned” to share with newbies like me?
