$3.3 Million for a Pokémon Card?!
The Pokémon market just gave us another “wait… WHAT?” moment. A rare Ivy Pikachu reportedly sold in a private deal for $3.3 million, setting a new record for that particular card. What blows my mind is how quickly the conversation around these cards has changed. We’re not talking about a $3,000 Charizard anymore. We’re talking multi-million-dollar collectibles, and Pokémon is right there competing with the biggest sports and Magic cards in the world. Between the $16.49 million Pikachu Illustrator sale earlier this year, the current Alpha Black Lotus auction, and now another $3M+ Pokémon sale, it feels like the ceiling keeps getting pushed higher. Do you guys think we’re going to see a $10 million+ Pokémon card again before the end of the decade? Or are we getting to the point where these numbers are becoming completely detached from the actual collecting hobby?

Yes we are going to continue to see that price range cause of Logan Paul paying that money and driving the hype behind Pokemon

Yeah, I think Logan Paul absolutely played a major role in pushing Pokémon into a different level of mainstream attention. The wild part is that his Pikachu Illustrator eventually sold for $16.5 million, making it the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction.

it is insane. it was only a few years ago that pokemon cards werent being looked at like this.. kids where playing the game some. and now its insane that just like sports cards pokemon cardboard is going for millions.

Yeah, it’s pretty wild when you step back and look at how quickly it happened. Pokémon went from something a lot of people associated primarily with kids playing the games and collecting cards to a legitimate high-end collectible market.

I think the answer will sort of depend on the economy. If the economy keeps climbing regardless of anything else, there’s still gonna be people pushing the market for cards. I’d gladly pay 13m for a card. Mostly because that means I had 13m as disposable income. Or to invest. Either way, I’d be cool with that. 🙂

Lol exactly. If I have $13 million sitting around that I can comfortably spend on a piece of cardboard, I’m probably not going to be too worried about whether the card market is having a good year.

I hate it so much but it seems like scalping is especially focused on Pokemon

Yeah they are trying to come up with ways to stop scalpers but truthfully nothing is going to stop them

We’ll see how much scalpers control this 30th anniversary release. Do y’all think that some of the big dealers get loaded cases with most of the great cards? I keep reading comments to that effect

Yea I do and its so that they can have people to watch them if they stream their box openings

That’s always the conspiracy theory on any set. I’ve seen Star Wars rippers too that get accused of getting loaded cases. It’s just volume. Those people get all those because they rip dozens of cases. So I don’t think it’s loaded cases as much as it just being volume

i do feel that some favoritism does go to breakers and hobby shops. but i get it that they are usually bying very large quantities. and as a business perspective i do feel that those should get some of the better hits. My only complaint is that it should be spread a little more better across other markets like retail.. At least with hobby shops the hits are usually gonna be pulled by someone who bought the product. Its just not everyone can afford hobby prices.

scalpers will always be a problem. and even when people and systems try to stop them they get aggressive or just figure new ways of ruining the hobby.

It is the unfortunate nature of something being cool, it’ll always attract the wrong people looking to get rich off what other people love
