• Best advice about ripping that I’ve run across

Corey Merriman writes about trading card collecting in The Athletic and had this to say about ripping packs. I think it’s spot on:

“If I can give you one piece of advice, it’s this:

Don’t go into a rip expecting to get your money back, no matter the format. It’s fun, but it’s still gambling. If you go in assuming you will only get back 25 percent of what you spent, you’ll end up being pleasantly surprised way more often than if you’re expecting to come out ahead. But whether that’s worth it or not is up to you.

I go into ripping knowing I’m gambling. But when I play the lottery I usually get nothing. In ripping I usually get a few cards for my PC. So for me that beats lottery gambling!

Totally facts. ive done a few breaks and ive done some single shows where they have chasers that you could possibly pull.. i rather have fun and i know that ill probably spend more then i should then what i get but theres been many times ive come out ahead.. like the uptown i got. that paid for that night of buying.

For me it’s really like slot machines. I “win” just often enough that I keep going. There’s probably an algorithm that tells companies just how many good cards and how often they need to include them to keep us buying

Breaks are so fun though lol but if you get a team break and get lucky enough to get your pc team its worth it in my opinion

I do buy into breaks now and then. And try the random ones as well. It’s definitely gambling. The now-and-then wins keep me coming back. I had beginner’s luck with the first break I bought into and got the case hit with a Deion Sanders Braves colorblast. I didn’t even realize colorblasts were a big deal! lol

Singles is the smart play. But breaks and rips are a lot of fun too and if not for them, then the singles market wouldn’t have any pull from. But like anything else of this variety it’s all about being responsible. Set limits and know when to walk away.

Good point that the singles come from rips. It might be the big buyers in a lot of cases (pardon the pun) but sometimes it’s smaller buyers. Like anything you buy you need to set limits just as you say

I rip knowing it’s money I set aside to have fun with. If I get a hit, awesome. If not, it’s still expendable I’m not in debt spending.

Like people do when they go to a casino. It IS fun to rip and hope for the big hit
