I generally decide based on which features I value more. Do I want the best resale value? Quickest turn time? Easiest process? Once I decide what means the most to me, thats when I will select one. For me personally, I use PSA just because they have the highest re-sale value and 99% of my collection is already PSA. A case can be made for other companies like SGC if maybe you just want it slabbed for your PC or if you want them back in hand ASAP to flip. SCG is also really good for vintage cards so submitting to them might make more sense for those kind of items. A lot of people will use BGS to chase black labels which is not an option for other companies. Everyone will have their own opinion here on what works best for them.

What makes SGC attractive to vintage collectors? Is it just the aesthetics of the slab?

I have a few low end vintage cards that are SGC and I tend to like the way the slab looks much better than PSA. Plus, I’m collecting for myself and not too worried about resale (currently).

SGC has a very long history grading vintage card and are well trusted by that community. Plus, with vintage, its all about eye appeal. So if the card looks good, and is authenticated by a grading company you can trust, it makes a lot of sense to go with SGC. I also don’t think re-sale value takes a huge hit with a vintage card in a SGC slab.

SCG is my go to mostly because it doesn’t take as long to get your slabs back. The wait for PSA is insane and I’m too impatient for that nonsense. And SCG I think looks better but that comes down to personal preferences as I haven’t experienced much of a difference between PSA and SCG pricing.

I have the luxury of working at a shop with a PSA drop off so that definitely influences my decision. I want to try TAG or Beckett sometime though. Aesthetically they have the best slabs

Well as you will hear most say that PSA is the golden standard. But honestly they dont have to be.. Ive used them and then ive used degree and happy with degree. i have bought cards slabbed by sgc and cgc.. with vintage i really think sgc is probably better but again everyone wants psa.. If doing for PC then i would compare everyones slabs and do what you like the look of best. Im going to be trying tag soon as i like the idea of the grade and card info being engraved into the slab.
