How do you feel about LIVE buying and selling?
Posted by KJXploR on August 7, 2026 at 10:20 amI was reading an article about the National Sports Collectors Convention and a Whatnot executive was saying that five years ago at National they had a tiny booth at the back of the convention and now they have the biggest presence there.
I know some of you buy on Whatnot. How do you feel about buying live? Do you do that often? How do you think that has changed the hobby…if it has?
Some of you probably also sell live. Is that more effective than a listing period on eBay or the like?
And I’d be interested in hearing about or seeing the best card you bought live.

Buying live is pretty fun. The only thing I hate about whatnot is the last second sniping that constantly happened.

-
Yeah I started just doing breaks but then just stopped for a bit on there and now do fb claim sales lol

Oh nice! I will have to take a look once you post about it!

I asked because I see friends on social media post about buying on Whatnot. I haven’t tried it and don’t plan to. But when I read about how much they’ve boomed in the past 5 years to go from a back table at nationals to a MAJOR player I thought I’d see what this community thinks since we’re all collectors. Not enjoying it sure helps in not spending too much money. I think it would be easy to get swept up in feeling pressure to buy live. It seems to me that technology is making it easier and easier to spend money before we take time to think about how much we’re spending

-
I haven’t watched any… and you’re helping me keep it that way. No need to expose myself to jerks when there are so many nice people out there
-
Yeah I hate the ones that just yell to yell. I prefer the calm and chill ones lol
-
I drop those streams like bad habits. I don’t have time for those sort of streams. I like the ones that genuinely seem to care for people and care to be good members of the community. Like if you start yelling, I just leave.

I haven’t tried it because I’m afraid I’d get caught up in feeling pressure and overpay AND buy too many things

i buy live all the time but usually from the same couple sellers.. There for sure needs to be more transparancy and accountability when sellers on whatnot or other platforms decide to keep a card and not honor things cause they didnt make as much as they wanted or what the card is or isnt worth.

it was more of there style of selling. its still a gamble but its more of a chaser pull and even if get cooked to much they usually throw something in that has a little value or worth it plus its the connections ive made with them.. cant say i do many actual breaks.
-
I’m the same way. I find the ones I like and tend to just stick with them. It’s trial and error finding them though. Just gotta be quick to decide once you know what you’re looking for.

Buying: It’s fun. It can be a cool way to get access to product that I can’t get locally. It can quickly get out of hand and expensive as there are plenty of other people around that will bid it up and you’ll find yourself paying higher than comp. Or you get into a break and get nothing, but people are paying big dollar to try and hit those case hits.
Selling: You’ve got to have a following to do well. When you’re first starting out on it, it’s hard to get your money out of it. I’ve done a few and most of them I’ve either lost a bit or broke even. Maybe someday I’ll make money on them but it seems like it’s very hit or miss and you’ve got to be on the edge of the market in order to get the most people in the stream.

Thanks for the nice breakdown of each aspect. I think it’s interesting that it took off in such a short period of time. Are there “trends” like on Tic Tok? Do some sellers have gimicks during their live time?
-
I have seen some sellers with gimmicks during the show to keep people entertained and involved
-
Oh for sure. And they gain a following that come to expect those things. Im not a Barnum and Bailey sort of guy, so I tend to just stay nice and reserved and thats what I usually look for in the sellers I follow.
