When my collecting hobby came together with live baseball
I don’t usually share this much personal info on social media but I will today because it’s a big part of why I collect baseball cards. I got a cancer diagnosis for the second time in 2022 and surgery took care of it. Watching the Braves on TV and collecting players’ cards for my PC was a big part of my recovery time.
I had just gotten into baseball again at the start of that season after a couple of decades of not paying attention to it. I decided that having a favorite player would make it more fun so I picked Spencer Strider, a rookie then who was being moved from reliever to starter. And I decided I needed a few of his trading cards. The timing of having this watching/collecting hobby couldn’t have been better for both my mental and physical health during this cancer recovery.
Fast forward to now…the cancer returned this past fall.
And now this hobby means even more to me.
The cancer meds I’m taking are helping, and for the first time in over a year I’ve felt up to an outing. So on a visit this week to see me, my sister drove me to a Braves minor league game about an hour from my house. I was lucky that it was a rehab game for Braves catcher Sean Murphy. And during that game I saw a social media post that Strider would be pitching on Thursday.
So we went back Thursday for me finally to see my favorite Brave IN PERSON! The one who has been the biggest focus of my PC.
It was so cool to sit behind the plate on Row 3 in a small stadium and see him throw 50 pitches. To his battery mate Murphy.
Did the Universe line things up for me or what?? I’m so grateful. For baseball and for this hobby and for being able to get to a game in person.
These are some of the cards I have. Cards of people I saw play this week. I got the Sean Murphy auto as soon as the Braves traded for him. I watched the draft when they got Camininiti and got one of his auto cards last year. He relieved Strider on Thursday. And then are some photos from my Strider PC, college and rookie ones. I’m also grateful for this site, for having a place to share with other collectors. Thanks to those of you who created it and maintain it. And to you who interact with me. I appreciate you all.
