$46K for Darth Vader… Are We Seeing non Sports finally getting their boom?
I saw the Darth Vader piece sell for around $46,000 and it got me thinking about how much the non-sports side of the hobby has changed.
We’ve talked about Pokemon, Marvel, Disney and Star Wars before, but it feels like collectors are becoming much more willing to put serious money into iconic characters and artwork—not just athletes. Vader is basically the perfect example. You don’t need to be a hardcore Star Wars collector to understand why that character has staying power.
It also makes me wonder where the next big collectible category is going to come from. Are we going to look back in 10 years and say, “Remember when everybody thought these were expensive?”
Would you rather put $46K into one incredible piece tied to an iconic character, or spread that money across a collection of cards/memorabilia?

From an investor perspective, I’d rather have the single grail card. When the economy softens and markets dip, the mid and low end stuff falls hardest and fastest. The Ultra high end tends to hold it’s value and even rise despite economic pressures. In good times, the grails not only increase more in terms of actual dollars, but also often times in terms of % gains as well.
As a collector & hobbyist, I want to spread it out and have an awesome collection to look at and show others

That’s pretty much where I land too. If I’m looking at it strictly as an investment, I’d much rather own one truly iconic grail than a pile of mid-tier cards. There’s something different about owning the card that everybody recognizes and wants.
But as a collector, give me the pile of cards every time. LOL I want the weird inserts, the numbered cards, the players I grew up watching, the cards with stories behind them, and the stuff that maybe isn’t worth a fortune but makes me smile when I flip through the collection.
I think that’s the sweet spot of the hobby: investor brain says grail, collector brain says “Ooh, I need that too.” LMAO

i think for things like this its really whos collecting it and if its auto by the person who plays the role or character and such.. I mean who wouldnt want a vader card with possible auto from the man himself.

It’s mostly because people love those Galaxy 2021 and 2023 sets. I don’t think they printed as many of them, but some of the unnumbered refractors from those sets go for hundreds. That particular Vader was a super. It just sold 5 months ago for $31k

yeah a nice card and still its crazy that pieces of cardboard go for so much..
