Card Shops who do Breaks
Posted by wickedcustomzcards on July 9, 2026 at 7:46 pmDo card shops that focus heavily on breaking eventually hurt the in-store customer experience? Have you seen shops where the breaking side became more important than the card shop itself?

I know some shops that do it on the side so they can focus on the in shop experience but Im sure theres some that hire specific breakers for those kind of shows so they have an online audience as well

I’m curious to see what answers you get because I do wonder about that
-
ive joined 2 breaks on the whatnot app because a buddy of mind told me abt it and i got pretty much base cards but i feel they do make more money for some reason
-
yeah thats part of the breaks. more then not your gonna get cooked but its the same as playing the lottery. though some lotteries are less of a buy in. with breaks they still have to send you something
-
yea but uk u win some u loose some and my luck i loose lol
-
ive only bought into a couple breaks and luckly bought in at a cheap price and yeah still loose as just got random cards cause they have to send something

I can’t say for sure. I know that a couple of the local shops do whatnot shows. I don’t know if they do breaks though. In those cases, I think it just adds to the customer experience. They can maybe get something extra from the shop and still support the local shop.
I also think that some of the local shops have to find alternative ways of moving product if they want to stay afloat. Some of them are just too small and need the additional revenues. I know if I could get boxes at wholesale, I’d be doing a lot more breaks than I do. As it is, I just do them for fun and when I get boxes that are super limited and whose values have gone up a ton. It’s a way for me to still get money out of the box *and* see what’s in it.

The it being a way to see whats in it in breaks is a fair point because then it lets the breakers see what products they could get in a personal box
-
Exactly. And I can’t always afford to rip a $600 box, but even if I sell the spots at a small loss, I still get to see what was in the box and still get a bit of the excitement of ripping the big hits and seeing them. I mean, the goal is to not sell at a loss at all, but I can validate it a lot easier if I don’t lose much on a break.

My store is highly customer focused. We have an online presence for breaks but also have a brick and morter store and we try to essentially provide customers with a relaxed, fun environment to rip. You can order a beer and box and just chill and rip.
-
I need one of those around here. Not sure any of my local shops would do that. I’m sure they’d let me buy a box and rip it in store, but the beer part, not sure…
-
Yeah it’s a very chill atmosphere that appeals to all age levels

Yeah when I get done with the whole Navy thing I was gonna look into opening a little shop wherever I end up retired at with like a small cafe in it that did bbq
-
