    Current Pokémon Market Thoughts?

What is everyone’s thoughts on the current Pokémon market? How long will this high last? If/when it drops, how much will it drop and what will it stabilize at?

I’m pretty new to collecting but the Pokémon space (TCG in general, really) seems to attract a MASSIVE audience and it keeps growing. Some of my friends have been into D&D forever, someone just got into actually playing Pokémon and started collected hard. Then, they shifted to Lorcana and have been ripping as many packs as they can buy from Target. It’s caught on and spread around the friend group like crazy…

Seems like it’s a bit more viral or contagious than sports card collecting tends to be because it’s attractive to people that aren’t really into sports…so I’d foresee it lasting a while, personally.

I can see it cooling down but a lot of card stabilizing at all time high. Kind of like the sports card market did after covid. I agree that Pokémon cards have a lot of avenues to draw in collectors. We see people who are into it due to nostalgia (like me), card game play, video game play and to flip and make money. It is the highest grossing media franchise of all time after all.

Ive noticed it dropping a good bit here in the last few weeks. Idk if it was because of the shutdown and alot of people were scared of possible job loss, or what. Seems like atm it’s a buying market.

Hey @cmooreskys I have noticed that too. I was pricing cards for a show this past week and one card I had it priced at $450 a few months ago and had to drop it to the new comp of $275. Luckily, I bought it raw and graded it myself so I still made a nice profit :). I somewhat agree that it may be time to buy but also hard to tell where the new bottom will be. Also, a lot of these card a year or so ago were not even close to where they were after this drop.

Could be for sure. Like @slade_sports_cards said, there are a LOT of entry points for collectors. Super fun to watch. Crazy what some of these cards end up going for!!

I think there is still a ton of growth opportunity with Pokémon because it appeals to so many levels of collectors. The big pitfall will be how long the “flippers” last in the market before they move on to the next big thing. This could cause singles to crash pretty hard in my opinion. I think that sealed product should maintain decent hold value/growth.

I agree 100% here. Like I said, it reminds me of the 2020 covid boom for sports cards. Once the flippers and all the nonsense went away, it stabilized at amounts that made more sense but were still well above 2020 prices. At that point, we had a nice healthy market.

Pokemon will remain huge.it might flux up and down depending on popularity of new sets as they are released. Right now I believe that one piece is making a lot of ground moving towards being a second option for ppl wanting to branch out and diversify their collection between the two instead of only Pokemon. I see one piece continuing to gain popularity and value.

I agree with you, One Piece is getting big fast. There are a lot of expensive cards out there and they are only climbing. I just wish I understood it lol

The one piece are some nice looking cards too. I haven’t got into them yet but have been looking at them lately,.
