• Graded vs raw experiment

Posted by KJXploR on July 8, 2026 at 6:49 pm

I got these on eBay and let the seller pay PSA for grading. I’m curious to see if raw cards end up selling for just as good of a price as these 8, 9 PSA graded cards do. In 6 months or a year will the graded card be the same price as raw or will they appreciate/depreciate more? These cost a little more than raw but not a lot (and not the PSA grading price difference unless the sellers did super bulk).

    Also I just like Umbreon.

So i think with tcg that value will probably always be there. pokemon cant get hurt haha.. so long as the tcg stays relevant and very popular then pokemon cards will always have some high value cards to them

A more expanded part of my experiment is to see how TCG seems to be like or not like sports cards. There’s a bigger international audience but fewer cards and totally different quality cards, at least how they feel in my hand. And as a friend pointed out the Beanie Baby boom lasted a bit and then fizzled. Is that coming for TCG?? I kind of think not because of the nostaliga element, much like in sports cards. So many of us here are thinking back to when we first started watching and/or collecting sports cards. It will be interesting to watch, and since this is not my investment portfolio I don’t have to stress about it!

cant wait to learn more about what you experience and your thoughts on the experiment you are doing

Honestly I think PSA 8s are pretty underrated. If they’re only a little more than raw, I’d rather buy the slab every time. You know it’s authentic, it’s protected, and if I ever decide to move it later it’s usually an easier sell.

PSA 9s are where I think you start seeing a real difference, but I also think it depends on the card. If pops get crazy, the premium can disappear pretty quick.

Either way, if you’re an Umbreon collector first and an investor second, I think you made the right call. I’d be interested to see an update in a year and see how the raw vs. graded prices actually compare.

That’s exactly how I’m thinking. Every point! And yes I’m an Umbreon fan so I’m happy to have the cards no matter appreciation or not. It’s nice to have validation. Thanks!

yeah thats part of the thing.. ive heard talk by many that if raw is one price and an psa 8 is the same price might as well sell raw and get the same value or possibly more.

That’s for sure a valid point especially if you can personally look at the card

Honestly if I really love a card and an in person auto is obtainable, I’ll get it signed, autoed and slabbed and chase the Auto 10 instead

      I think that’s a great strategy

Honestly ive kinda wondered why send in a card just to have the auto graded.. but im sure theres a reason behind it

Sometimes it makes me wonder what the criteria for autos are. Just cause I know my own signature varies based on other factors

For real…I don’t know that I could for sure identify my OWN signature just by looking at it

Usually its just overall presentation….Is the auto centered well….does it go over import details (player name, serial number, RC shield)….is the dead spots in the signature or is it consistent all the way through…..

Interesting!! That makes sense. I have one stick-on auto that goes over the edge and the ink bled so I’m sure it would get a poor autograph grade. I got it early in my collecting and am sure I paid a lot less because anyone with knowledge wouldn’t buy it. But it’s for my PC and I kind of like that it shows the players are real people who get tired of signing a lot of cards and stickers

I think it’s pretty accurate for 95% of my card purchases. I might somewhat be looking at potential value but mostly I get a card because I like it or the player. Best case scenario it’s both

It sounds like you know Pokemon. Which are your favorites? For you to collect and/or to sell

Cool that you PC Snorlax. I’m just having fun learning about Pokemon and found Dex is what I was looking for to help me keep up with what I want for my PC. I’m not going for investment but would like what I buy not to lose too much value for who I’m going to give the cards to in the future

Ok. What do you mean that you bought them on eBay and then let the seller submit them to PSA? Was that a service that the seller was offering? Or did you request it somehow?

    • quackcab69

I think that it means they bought the cards already graded

@quackcab69 is right. I bought it already graded. I figure when I buy a graded slab the seller has paid PSA (or whoever) and I up front know the grade. Not like when I buy raw and send it myself and hope for a certain grade.

Ok. I misread it. I totally agree though, why spend the time and money getting it graded if it’s one you want and the price is right.

Some sellers have the option. It’s like when a card gets authenticated by eBay. It goes from the seller to PSA, then to you

I had no idea that was an option at all. Interesting.

Not every seller has the option. I think it’s through certain vetted sellers
