• Is This About to Be the Biggest Magic Card Ever?

Goldin has a PSA 10 Alpha Black Lotus up for auction right now, and this one feels different. It has already blown past $550,000 in early bidding, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up becoming the biggest Magic: The Gathering card sale we’ve ever seen.

The Alpha Black Lotus is already one of the most iconic cards in the entire TCG world, but a Gem Mint 10 example is an entirely different beast. At this point, we’re talking about a card that could potentially be competing with the biggest sales we’ve seen across the entire trading card hobby.

Wow, heading over a million. Why this card at this time do you think?

Yeah, that’s the part I’m really curious about. Black Lotus is obviously a hobby icon, but why is THIS copy getting so much attention right now?

I think a lot of it comes down to the combination of PSA 10 + Alpha + Black Lotus + only three PSA 10s on the census + Goldin putting it in a major auction. That’s basically a perfect storm for serious collectors.

I wonder if it’s because BIG card sales are getting lots of attention right now. All kinds of cards, not just sports ones. Celebrities, mega businesses buying and putting them on display, even ordinary folks are getting lots of press when they pull that 1 of 1 that has gotten SO much attention. Bounties. People seeing cards as investment, actual financial investment like their 401k. Big business, big coverage, influencers, breakers. It’s not the same hobby that existed even 10 years ago. Maybe not even 5.

Yeah, I think that’s a huge part of it. The hobby has basically become entertainment, collecting, and investing all rolled into one.

Ten years ago, a crazy pull might make the rounds among collectors. Now somebody pulls a 1/1 on a live stream, a celebrity gets involved, the card gets a bounty, influencers start talking about it, and suddenly millions of people who don’t normally follow cards are seeing it.

Not sure if it will surpass Post Malone’s $2mil for the One Ring (assuming that is the current all time high – I haven’t followed that closely), but I think it “should”. By “should” I mean this is the card that deserves to be the holy grail of MTG.

Yes, an example of what I’m saying above ^. Celebrities are putting cards in the news in ways they didn’t before. I feel like things are changing rapidly right now. Big money that was never in cards before is now being spent what feels like almost daily to me. How many million dollar cards have there been in the last few months?

Yeah, it really does feel like we’ve entered a different phase of the hobby. Between Logan Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator selling for $16.49 million, the $11 million Ohtani, the $4.25 million Jordan, and now the Cooper Flagg 1/1 already getting multimillion-dollar offers, there have been some absolutely insane numbers flying around this year. What’s interesting to me is that it isn’t just traditional sports-card money anymore. Pokémon, Magic, sports, celebrities, influencers… they’re all starting to overlap. It makes me wonder if we’re watching the hobby become a legitimate high-end collectibles market in a way it never really was before.

Yeah, I’m with you on that. The One Ring had the crazy one-of-one factor and the Post Malone story, but Black Lotus feels like the card that was always destined to be the holy grail of Magic.
