Posted by hawk44s on January 26, 2026 at 12:46 pmI will be setting up at my first show on Feb. 14th! Would love to hear some Do’s and Don’ts for a first timer like myself so that I can maximize my first show!

That’s awesome, I set up for my first show in November and it was great. I would recommend a couple things.
1. Make sure cards are displayed nicely. This may be a personal thing, but I am much more enticed to look at tables with display cases and pricing on the cards. I am usually not drawn to random cards laid out on a table with no pricing. You can get stuff like display cases and price guns for really cheap on Amazon.
2. Understand the demographic attending the show. With my first show, I mistakenly brought too high end of cards. The show was a lot of younger kids and newer collectors who weren’t interested in some of my cards at their price points, which I completely understand. I just wish I had brought some lower end cards.
3. This was a personal thing, but be open to buying. I have been selling on Ebay and WhatNot for a while now, and I struggle with maintaining enough inventory. When me and a friend set up at this show, we bought a few cards from a kid there, and pretty soon word got around that we were buying. I was able to pickup and trade for some good inventory while I was there.

I agree with everything cknack said. A neat and priced display is important imo. If I’m walking a show and see a table with cards not priced, I usually just take a quick look and keep walking. Having a good mix of cards it important. I usually have $1, $2 and $3-10 boxes along with my showcase cards. Selling those little cards there can add up and its really the best place to sell cards of that value. If you continue to do shows, buying as a vendor is really important. It’s the best opportunity to buy a % of comps since both parties should know you need room to make money. A slow sales show can be saved by a good buying show. Another tip I have is to really just try things. Come up with a game plan for certain cards and see if it works (obviously don’t go too crazy). Then from there you will get an idea of what you want to do more of and less of. I like to track my transactions to see how they work out in the long run. The more shows you do, the better you will get at it. You just have to take that first step and try it while continuing to learn. Let us know if you have any other questions!

I would say the first show was a success. Had just over 300 in sales and picked up some stuff too. Need to keep building inventory for the next one!

Nice! Slow and steady. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I have done the monthly show at a local mall twice now. Its the best avenue to buy thats for sure. I would say best advice would be to have a wide variety in price $2 to $5 dollar boxes sell quicker then some of the higher priced unless its a case hit or super popular player.

Ahh thats cool. yeah i see there are alot of bargain shoppers over the case hit shoppers

It seems like each show is so different. Sometimes the value boxes are a hit and sometimes its just the showcase cards people want. My advice it to have a good range so you have something for every kind of buyer.
