• The New Vintage.

Vintage and what does it mean to the new collector? Me being 40, vintage is the guys that I grew up unable to watch, Mantle, Mays, Aaron etc. Guys they would show flashbacks of on ESPN.

I truly believe that the new “Vintage” is the 90’s inserts. The cards are most often incredibly hard to gem or even find, especially the serial numbered ones. You can’t even gem them straight out of the box, if you can even find a decent condition box and most notably, guys like Griffey, Thomas, Jordan, Gretzky, Brady. They played before most of the “kids” in the hobby were even born. When you watch espn or scroll social media, its those guys in the 90’s and early 2000’s that you see being flashed back to the current.

As markets explode, it does seem like vintage cards have plateaued slightly while PMG’s, Star Rubies, Refractors have had monumental sales.

    Thoughts?

I agree. It seems as time goes on, we almost need a new category for the 90s era stuff. Its not vintage and its technically not modern at this point. You are right that so many people in the hobby never saw a lot of people from that era play or if they did, they were too young to remember. There is a ton of upside in that market with there being so many GOATs and their best cards being from that time frame. Population is big here as a lot of that stuff was not worth much when it came out so people didn’t take that good care of it. Plus like you said, a lot of it is condition sensitive right from the pack.

I do wonder how many people collect cards from before their time. There have to be some because the Honus Wagner card is a holy grail. And Mickey Mantle. But I do think we tend to be nostalgic about players and characters from our childhoods. I was just talking with someone who collects a certain Pokemon because it was his favorite when he was a kid. What do you think? Is nostalgia a big driver in collecting cards? I find that I’m more drawn to the young players who are trying to make it and become superstars

I will say I do have a Mickey Mantle card that I do think is vintage cause never did get to see him play as I’m 35 but being a baseball fan I know of him. Other vintage cards I personally look for are players that I grew up watching. So i think the definition of vintage is constantly changing as time and the hobby evolve. Especially since we are getting players that are being considered generational talents such as Ohtani, Wembenyama for the Spurs, and others in many sports.
