• Wemby collectors… we might have a new problem. 😂🔥

Posted by kyberforged on September 15, 2026 at 1:02 pm

2025-26 Topps Chrome Black Basketball just dropped, and one of the biggest cards has already been pulled: a Victor Wembanyama SuperFractor autograph 1/1. And this isn’t some random insert — it’s one of the headline cards in a premium release that also features LeBron, Curry, Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper and other major names.

Chrome Black is making its basketball debut this year, with one encased autograph per hobby box and a pretty nasty lineup of low-numbered parallels.

    But here’s what I’m wondering…

Are we watching Wemby establish himself as the next true modern basketball blue-chip, or are collectors getting caught up in the hype because every new Wemby 1/1 feels like an event?

Because between the high-end Topps releases, the crazy rarity and the amount of money already moving around his cards, Wemby’s market is getting harder and harder to ignore.

Would you rather own a Wemby 1/1 auto from a premium product like Chrome Black, or put that same money into an iconic Jordan/Kobe/LeBron card?

I feel like collectors are getting caught up in the hype. Especially after the success he had last season! However as a Spurs fan I’d rather for now have a Jordan or Kobe card over a 1/1 Wemby only cause I know his market will inevitably end up dropping

I can understand that perspective, especially as a Spurs fan. Wemby’s ceiling is obviously exciting, but there’s still a lot of career left to play out, and modern prospect markets can move pretty dramatically.

For the same money, I can definitely see the appeal of owning a Jordan or Kobe where you’re buying into an already-established legacy rather than betting on what the next 10 years look like.

honestly i probably would put that money into jordan or kobe or shaq or someone else. some of these newer player cards are just crazy prices and alot of people will never be able to afford one. hell mj market is like that in a way. heck if they did things with cards back then like they do now i think some of jordans and all the other greats cards would be valued way up there with pieces of relics and such

Yeah the affordability is what is insane cause common collectors will never hit these big cards and shops/streamers will and then charge a metric heck ton for it

that is true.. but some of us smaller collectors have gotten to pull some nice hits. we all will someday if we keep at it. but it is crazy how it doesnt take long for certain ones to be pulled with in the week of release

same here.. if i pull a big hit it will happen when it does. im not buying to chase the hits.. and some ill just buy as a single

That’s honestly probably the healthiest way to approach it. Rip because you enjoy ripping, not because you’re expecting the next pack to pay for itself.

yeah its how i fell. i mean i might get in a break if i feel the breaker enough and feel like its an honest breaker. but yeah i cant afford to buy boxes after boxes

Honestly, same. There’s something to be said for taking the gambling out of it and just buying the card you actually want.

Pulling a monster is obviously an incredible feeling, but with singles you can target exactly what you want, find a good price, and not end up with 47 cards you never wanted along the way.

Absolutely. That’s one of the coolest parts of the hobby — you don’t have to be a huge collector or have a massive budget to eventually hit something crazy. All it takes is being in the right box at the right time.

Yeah, that’s definitely one of the biggest changes in the hobby. The ceiling on some modern cards has gotten so high that the average collector can’t realistically compete for them anymore.

But I also think there’s a flip side: those huge cards eventually have to find buyers, and that creates opportunities for collectors to pick up other cards from the same player at more reasonable levels. You don’t necessarily need the 1/1 to have a great PC.

That’s exactly what makes the comparison so interesting. We know what Jordan, Kobe and Shaq ultimately became, so when you buy one of their iconic cards, you’re buying an established piece of basketball history.

And I completely agree about the older cards. Imagine if Jordan’s early cards had today’s production techniques — serial-numbered parallels, 1/1s, autos, patches, case hits, all of it. There would probably be some absolutely insane Jordan cards out there.

Instead, we have a lot fewer of those premium versions from that era, which makes the iconic stuff we DO have even more interesting.

It really makes you wonder what today’s “common” cards are going to look like 30 years from now.

that is so true. in a few years from now technology obviously is just advancing and cards are going to be crazy.

Wemby is a talented player and has value, but I’d much rather put my money into LeBron, Kobe, or Jordan.

It def seems like the safer move. I got a couple Wembys that I think could be 10s I may send in soon because those GOATS can be pricey and if Wemby is becoming a baby GOAT, his prices could be like the others one day. I def don’t want to invest into the crazier low numbered stuff but I think if you got some clean 10 rookies of his those will age nicely without a huge price point to obtain

Honestly Lebron because he is this past 15-20 years Michael Jordan. Just like Kobe was the successor to MJ. Lebron is the successor to Kobe now just a question of whos gonna be the next generational goat

Not really lol his first finals he singlehandidly took a team that didnt belong there to the finals hence why they got swept. Also idk how much better he couldve played since he literally leads the league in scoring lol

It’s hard to compare it to Jordan. Honestly if you made a Mt Rushmore of just the best winners that would be far easier. Brady, Jordan, Jeter

I just tell my little brother to go back and watch Jordan. There was something almost magical about his game. He literally defied gravity at times. There are some incredible ball players but I don’t think anyone will ever carry the aura that MJ did. He was feared by literally everyone on the court and if they didn’t, he made sure they did by the end of the game.

Yeah there is a quote of how he got told 45 isnt 23 when he came back wearing the 45. Also I swear the man floated during his one of his shots against the Jazz I believe or he at least hovered lol

ehh honestly my comment mostly should have been about things or comments he has made that has stirred the pot and such.. i was watching a think with that stephen guy and it was about the whole mj and lebron and whos the goat and such. Ultimatly every player could play better heck alot will say it themself. Lebron is a great player for his era. like mj was for his. Many GOATS of the game.
