  • What’s your preferred method of selling cards and paring down your collection?

Over the past year, I’ve tried a few different avenues:

    1) eBay: higher fees, but lots of traffic. Higher-end cards can sell quickly, but lower-end cards (even when priced competitively) seem difficult to move due to the sheer volume of competition.

    2) CollX: lower fees, but lower traffic. Higher-end cards get some views, but my experience has been those cards tend to sit for a while on this platform unless priced below comps. That said, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the mix of buyers on CollX, with success selling low to mid-end cards. I believe that because CollX gives out monthly $10 credits to their subscribers and encourages users to keep their earnings on the platform, there are a lot of buyers spending in the $1 to $10 range.

    3) COMC: higher (and mostly up-front) fees, but the easiest way to sell since they handle everything but the pricing. Perhaps it’s the selection of cards I submitted, but these cards seem to move the slowest of all the options I’ve tried, even when priced at or below eBay comps. General advice I gathered is to submit cards in the $3 to $10 range, and even though I sent in a mix of sports and numbered/patch/auto cards, so far sales have been very few and far between.

    4) In person at LCS or card shows: Needless to say, this has been the fastest and easiest way to turn cards into cash, but I generally have to accept anywhere between 70-80% of comps. For me, the bigger negative is that dealers are only looking for liquid cards they know they can sell quickly, and I only have so many case hits that I can sell this way. Everything else basically has to get sold through other means.

I’m reluctant to try Facebook Marketplace because of the lack of protections in place (both financial and safety). I have yet to try Fanatics Collect because there seems to be a focus on high-end cards that I might as well take to a dealer in person and get instant cash. I’m also looking forward to seeing what this site tries to do with its marketplace, although right now it doesn’t look like it has any buyer/seller protections in place either.

Would love to hear what you all are doing and if there other options worth giving a try!

I generally just sell either on eBay or at local shows as a vendor. I enjoy setting up at shows so I like having the inventory there. Also, when setting up as a vendor, it gives you a better opportunity to buy because it is somewhat known that a dealer would need to buy at a discounted price. To me, I wouldn’t sell to a vendor or a LCS, as you are giving too much of a discount. You for sure get the most eyes on eBay listings but the fees are pretty high. Facebook marketplace is too risky and too much of a headache. The others you mentioned I have not tried. My goal is to help build up the buying and selling on this platform. If you have stuff available, post them here!

I think it really depends on what you’re trying to sell. When it comes to high end stuff, selling on Ebay has worked best for me. They offer the most protection for online transactions, and you get a lot of eyes on your items. I have personally never used other auction houses such as Golden or Heritage, but I would imagine it is pretty similar. For mid-range liquid items, setting up at shows and running Whatnot streams has been the best for me. That’s where I personally sell closer to comps, with less fees. I personally don’t sell much low-end singles, but I think the same would be true as the mid-range. Dollar bins at shows, and high volume low value live streams work great from what I’ve seen. I agree with Slade, I like the idea of buying more on forums and discords, when the right protections are in place. I personally have not yet found the right forum or discord that suits my needs, but I think that we need to open more avenues for selling.

Im mainly on ebay. Have had some decent sales and there are times of no sales but im not trying to get rich and let the patience go there.. If a card sells it sells. .. I hear live selling is a way to go like on whatnot or ebay live. Ive done a few sells that way but its a little more hetic for me as not that great talking on video or live streams as i feel like im sounding dumb.
