I might know someone who knows someone. Let me do some asking around!

I prefer the signature over his body rather than his name, just personal preference.

I’ve been wondering about this too, but I’ll be honest, I’m still trying to understand how all of this actually plays out in practice. From the outside, it feels like PSA is just the default because of resale, and everything else has to compete on speed or cost.

I remember hearing a lot of momentum around SGC before the acquisition, mostly because it was cheaper and faster, not because people thought it would beat PSA on value. (Although, I personally prefer the way their slabs look…)

I’m still learning a lot and don’t do much grading at this point, but it seems like if a true #2 is going to emerge, I’d imagine it’s going to HAVE to clearly win on either price or speed (or both), not just be “slightly better.” But, that doesn’t solve the resale value dilemma…

The only logical option is for us to all stage a revolution and starve PSA by forming an alliance and stop submitting to them…Haha!

I mean, I don’t do much grading myself. That said, some of what I’ve seen lately has me pretty unlikely to grade with certain brands.

It seems like there should be room for a long-term minded new grading company to come in and steadily earn market share.

That’s so sick!! Some of my earliest collecting “grails” were Marvel cards in grade school. We were too poor for me to get any though, so I had to settle for free St. Louis Cardinals cards that cops used to hand out to kids playing outside. 🤣

These look great! I don’t really have much in the way of patches…I have a few but nothing crazy.

I agree with the “game-worn” aspect. I get why they’ve started fudging that process a bit but truly game-worn/used stuff is so cool. My concern is that it lowers the interest or value long term because there are so many game-worn options out there.

Could be for sure. Like @slade_sports_cards said, there are a LOT of entry points for collectors. Super fun to watch. Crazy what some of these cards end up going for!!

I’m pretty new to collecting but the Pokémon space (TCG in general, really) seems to attract a MASSIVE audience and it keeps growing. Some of my friends have been into D&D forever, someone just got into actually playing Pokémon and started collected hard. Then, they shifted to Lorcana and have been ripping as many packs as they can buy from Target. It’s caught on and spread around the friend group like crazy…

Seems like it’s a bit more viral or contagious than sports card collecting tends to be because it’s attractive to people that aren’t really into sports…so I’d foresee it lasting a while, personally.

    The Hobbi Community Guidelines

Welcome to The Hobbi — where collectors belong. This is your space to learn, connect, and share the joy of collecting. To keep this community safe and fun for everyone, here are a few simple guidelines:

    1. Be Kind & Respectful

We’re all here because we love collecting. Treat others how you’d want to be treated — no personal attacks, trolling, or toxic behavior. Friendly debate? Sure. Disrespect? Nope.

    2. Keep It Clean & Relevant

Post in the right forum, keep things family-friendly, and avoid spam. Off-topic posts are fine in the lounge, but let’s keep most threads hobby-focused.

    3. No Buying, Selling, or Trading (Except in Premium)

Buying, selling, or trading is only allowed in the Premium Members area. This paywall helps keep scammers out and protects our members while we build a full verification system. Please respect this boundary — any deals outside that space will be removed.

    4. Share Knowledge, Not Scams

Scammers have no place here. If you see something shady, report it. We’ll investigate and remove bad actors quickly.

    5. Protect Personal Info

Don’t post private addresses, phone numbers, or financial details. Protect your info and respect others’ privacy.

    6. Constructive Contributions Only

Ask questions, share wins, teach others, or celebrate cool finds. Complaints are fine if constructive — help us keep the tone helpful and encouraging.

    7. Moderation & Strikes Policy

    We use a three-strike system:

    • 1st Strike: Friendly reminder and guidance.

    • 2nd Strike: Formal warning and possible temporary suspension.

    • 3rd Strike: Permanent ban.

Serious violations (scamming, hate speech, threats) may result in immediate removal.

    8. Feedback is Welcome

This community is built for you — if you see ways we can improve, let us know. We’re collectors too, and we’re building this together.

Bottom line: Love the hobby, hate the noise. Keep this a place where collectors at every level feel at home.

A graded 9 cheaper than raw is crazy!

What makes SGC attractive to vintage collectors? Is it just the aesthetics of the slab?

I have a few low end vintage cards that are SGC and I tend to like the way the slab looks much better than PSA. Plus, I’m collecting for myself and not too worried about resale (currently).
