If given access to the same advances in fitness, medicine, and technology, yes, I think most of the all time greats would still be great.
If you want to dig in a little more, you could break it down by era and sport. If you go back far enough in almost any sport, you’ll run into vintage players that wouldn’t translate to today’s skill level. If we’re talking 1920s football, then no, most guys couldn’t hack it against today’s athletes. Same for Basketball in the 40s. However, if we’re talking all time legends like babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Mantle in baseball and guys like Maravich, Dr J, Wilt, West in basketball, and Sayers, Butkus, Jimmy Brown, in Football, then yes, I think they would all adapt to the game and be great. At their core, these guys were great at fundamentals and had the drive it takes to be great. Same goes for Boxing, Soccer, Tennis, etc.
People, especially the younger generations, think incredible talent emerged during their lifetime. Not the case at all.

Bears, Bulls, and White Sox.
As far as actual team collecting, the Bears are the team I collect just about anyone in a bears uniform. For the Sox and Bulls, it’s specific players from those teams. For the Bulls, it’s mostly MJ, but also a lot of the guys from that era like Scottie, Rodman, Kerr, and even Phil Jackson and others. For the White Sox, it’s mostly Frank Thomas, but also sometimes a random player will catch my eye, like a Ray Durham. Also like the vintage Sox stuff. Guys like Nellie Fox, Lou Aparicio, Minnie Minoso, etc.

90s basketball is going insane right now. People have been saying for years that Shaq is severely undervalued, and about 2 weeks ago, he exploded in value. The other guys that always come up in that conversation, but haven’t surged yet are Duncan, Iverson, and maybe Barkley.
90s baseball is moving with Griffey leading the charge and being followed by bonds. I think Frank Thomas has room to grow in that class.
90s football has been lagging behind the others, but I think it’s a matter of time before Barry sanders, Jerry Rice, Peyton Manning, Randy Moss, and maybe TO start to take off. Sanders and manning are moving lately. Look to what is hot in 90s basketball and find the parallels in football. Inserts like platinum portraits, planet metal, etc are much cheaper in football.

I think vintage is amazing and fun to collect. I started collecting vintage basketball goats. Basically from the 1970 tall boys on back with guys like Wilt, Kareem, Pistol Pete, Dr Jplus toss in the 1980 and 81 magic and bird topps. Then moved on to vintage Chicago bears rookies like Sweetness, Butkus, Sayers, Ditka, etc. also have a few Jimmy Brown cards and Johnny U cards. Still don’t have their rookies though. Moved onto some baseball with a nice 1969 Nolan Ryan. Technically his 2nd year card, but first solo card. Grabbed the 53 Jackie recently and would like to get the entire Topps run some day. Would also like to someday own a nice 1952 Willie Mays as well as maybe slowly starting building a 1953 Topps set. I think it’s possibly the most beautiful set ever printed. On the lookout for a 1979 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee rookie. If you have the pulse of the hobby, you will see a big push into vintage nonsports really becoming popular. A lot of it intrigues me. I feel like I need a 1931 Walt Disney in my collection.

I think it’s a few things. I think, as you mentioned, Shaq is a part of the culture for many decades now. The Hype around him coming to the NBA is unlike anything I had seen. He was shattering backboards left and right and was even in movies from day 1. Hell, I even listened to his rap album with the fooshnickas (sp?) and played his video games. His shoes are in every wal-mart and he’s been on sports television for years and in every damn commercial. He has many titles and has a case for greatest center ever. In addition to that, he’s likeable. Now, combine that with the fact that Jordan and Kobe have gotten almost unattainable to a decent percentage of the hobby, and people are looking for the next guy they would enjoy collecting.

Thanks. Yeah, the one with the glasses is his Row 0. Probably the best card of his I own. Very cool in hand. Had to get the one with the piece of bat in it. Just so unique to see him in a batting pose instead of pitching. Those starquest Red are going to start popping off. Started seeing buzz for them about 2 months ago because of the rarity and how good it looks as an MJ color match. It’s also cool because the style is uniform across many sports, so I ran out and grabbed the blue, green, and red of Jordan, Gretzky, Kobe, Griffey, maddux, Clemens, Randy Johnson, and Frank Thomas. Just a few days ago, the Jordan sale went crazy and the others are going to follow, imo. There is a gold parallel, but the price is insane, so I’ll stick with the red

I try to keep them somewhat organized, but not catalogued per se. I have boxes for each sport, and certain boxes for teams and players I collect. Binders for certain higher end raw cards and Zion cases for higher end slabs. I am in the process of scanning my cards into the market movers app. This allows me to track price changes and search my collection. Got a couple thousand scanned and have many more to go
