Dolly’s passing got me thinking about other icons that might be worth researching their “rookie” trading cards. I picked up a early Lucille Ball, a Princess Diana, and a few more 1969 Apollo cards of Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to go with the Neil Armstrongs I picked up the other day.

With the unfortunate passing of Dolly Parton (RIP), i looked to see if she had a “rookie card” and it turns out she did. There was a 1967 deck of Heather Country Music playing cards that featured her on the 2 of Spades and is considered to be her first trading card. Prices were insane and several sold in the immediate aftermath of the announcement for well over $1,000. Thanks to manipulating some search terms, I was able to find the entire deck of cards still int he original box for $150. Looking forward to it’s arrival as there are several other icons featured in the deck such as Johnny Cash.

From an investor perspective, I’d rather have the single grail card. When the economy softens and markets dip, the mid and low end stuff falls hardest and fastest. The Ultra high end tends to hold it’s value and even rise despite economic pressures. In good times, the grails not only increase more in terms of actual dollars, but also often times in terms of % gains as well.

As a collector & hobbyist, I want to spread it out and have an awesome collection to look at and show others

Not sure if it will surpass Post Malone’s $2mil for the One Ring (assuming that is the current all time high – I haven’t followed that closely), but I think it “should”. By “should” I mean this is the card that deserves to be the holy grail of MTG.

I’ve really had a hard time getting into modern football since 2024. If anything, I’ll probably keep my eye out for legendary players and former greats to see how Topps incorporates them into their case hits and other offerings.. Not a ton of new guys really move the needle for me.

Honestly, the whole damn thing! lol. I love me a good rabbit hole. I’ve gone down most of them and had a blast the entire time. The only one that I went into for a brief period was buying into too many breaks. I quickly pulled myself out of it and started getting a bit more surgical in my collecting. the other which I have successfully avoided is the whole WhatNot live buying. Nothing against those who do, but I know my personality, and I’d be buried in debt if I didn’t avoid it all together.

Personally, Yes. If it’s for sale, put a price on it. Make it clear to see and put it on the front. If you just want to show off some cool stuff at a show and have a conversation piece, fair enough…to each their own. I don’t mind if it’s a card or 2, but if you decided to show up as a vendor and didn’t bother to take the time to look up current values and price your cards, it comes across as lazy and frustrating to most buyers. 9 times out of 10, unless it’s something I really want and don’t see too often, I’m just moving to the next table.

I was and am heavily influenced by my dad. He has always been a sports guy and always been someone who enjoys collecting. I certainly was born with that gene also. Starting with collecting rocks as a kid. After that it was coins and ninja turtles. Eventually starting collecting baseball cards with my dad as a boy, only to step away rom the hobby in the late 90s as dad had to focus on other things and I was more involved in school and video games.

Now, as an adult with a family, I don’t just collect what my dad likes, but I can collect things that matter to me. I have my own personal nostalgia for things like 90s basketball and watching the Bulls dynasties. I still have all of my TMNT toys from being a kid and have acquired all the video games i ever wanted. However, I really find joy in collecting items that may not have much monetary value, but have a connection with people I care most about. For example, i have an autistic son who is 18 years old and has been obsessed with Darth Vader, and Spongebob and Gameshows like Jeopardy, Deal or No Deal, and Wheel of Fortune. As a result, I own Jeopardy on every game console imaginable. Now, will I ever play them? Probably not, but as I am looking at my collection I get to come across these things that remind me of him, and it adds a layer of joy that makes me love collecting even more. My wife is into F.R.I.E.N.D.S. so I have all the friends games and funko pops on display. I stop by value bins and pickup any darth vader cards I can find at cards shows for my son. Finding ways to incorporate connections with your collection from those you love the most is in many ways, the most satisfying part of collecting, imo.

haha, I would be over the moon if 1/4 came back a 10! Hell, if i got 5 10s I’d be stoked. honestly, I’m just hoping for mostly 8s and 9s and not too many 6 and unders and not too many min size issues. Based on what I’ve seen ad heard lately, I’m anticipating getting smoked on quite a few.

You are definitely right with that last point. This year and last year, we only were able to make it for 1 day. Even moving quickly and missing a lot along the way, we werent able to see everything. We were there from the moment the doors opened until the last hour of the day and still didn’t get to stop by every table. Not even close. Next year, we are booking an air bnb and trying to go for at least 2 days

Thanks, man. That’s a very generous thing to offer! He has the same interest now as an 18 year old that he had as a 5 year old. His entire room is nothing but darth vader and miniature models of Price is Right games, lol. His 2 worlds collided when he saw a Star Wars themed episode of Deal or No Deal and Darth Vader played The Banker. He watches that episode over and over again. Every May 4th, we put the episode on and he gets dressed up in full darth gear to play the role of the Banker. he has every word and gesture memorized.
