That’s exactly what makes the comparison so interesting. We know what Jordan, Kobe and Shaq ultimately became, so when you buy one of their iconic cards, you’re buying an established piece of basketball history.

And I completely agree about the older cards. Imagine if Jordan’s early cards had today’s production techniques — serial-numbered parallels, 1/1s, autos, patches, case hits, all of it. There would probably be some absolutely insane Jordan cards out there.

Instead, we have a lot fewer of those premium versions from that era, which makes the iconic stuff we DO have even more interesting.

It really makes you wonder what today’s “common” cards are going to look like 30 years from now.

I can understand that perspective, especially as a Spurs fan. Wemby’s ceiling is obviously exciting, but there’s still a lot of career left to play out, and modern prospect markets can move pretty dramatically.

For the same money, I can definitely see the appeal of owning a Jordan or Kobe where you’re buying into an already-established legacy rather than betting on what the next 10 years look like.

That’s honestly a really reasonable approach. At $60–$80 plus potentially 4+ months with the money tied up, the card has to have a pretty compelling reason to take that gamble.

For PC, I can understand waiting because the goal is completely different. But for something you’re looking to sell, I’d rather take the guaranteed money today than gamble on a 10 months down the road. Especially with modern players where the market can change so quickly.

And that’s the part I think gets overlooked with grading costs — it’s not just the grading fee. There’s an opportunity cost to having that card sitting at PSA while the market is moving.

If the numbers don’t make sense before the submission, hoping for a 10 probably isn’t a strategy. It’s a lottery ticket.

I completely agree. The wait time can almost be more important than the grading fee if you’re grading for resale.

A 100-day turnaround is a LONG time in the modern hobby, especially with prospects and current players. A card can go from “🔥 buy now” to yesterday’s news before you even get it back from PSA.

That’s why I think you really have to separate PC submissions from investment/resale submissions. For my PC, I’m fine waiting. But if I’m trying to capitalize on a player who is heating up, I’d much rather sell or trade while the hype is there than have the card sitting at PSA while the market moves on.

If you do I recommend you’re local card shop. They can do all the hard work for you and most will even assess it for grading for you

That’s one of the things that really pulls me toward vintage too. Even when I don’t know the player, holding a card from the 50s or 60s feels like holding a little piece of baseball history.

And the high-grade copies absolutely blow my mind. These cards survived decades of kids putting them in bike spokes, flipping them, putting them in shoeboxes, attics and garages… and somehow somebody’s copy made it through all of that looking good enough to get an 8, 9 or even a 10.

Absolutely! I’m looking forward to putting it through a real card show test and seeing how it holds up once it’s loaded down with slabs. The comfort and storage are definitely the two things I’m most curious about.
