Yeah I don’t think I’d submit anything in season at this point. It’s got a card I have a good idea can hit a grade that makes it worth it. It’s great on old school cards becasue on lots of them hitting an 8 makes it worth it

That’s exactly where I’m at with T206s too. The history is what makes them so appealing, but it’s hard to get excited about spending money on a player I’ve never heard of.
I think the key would be finding a player where the card itself has some kind of story — a Hall of Famer, notable team, interesting pose or one of the scarcer backs. Then you’re collecting the history of the card AND learning the history of the player along the way.

It really has. And honestly, that might be one of my favorite parts of collecting you can still enjoy the exact same hobby we had as kids, but there are so many more ways to collect now.

It really is wild when you take a step back and think about it. We’re assigning thousands — sometimes millions — of dollars to tiny pieces of cardboard.
I remember the Beckett days too. You’d get the new price guide and immediately start flipping through it to see what your cards were “worth.” Now you can watch an auction end on your phone and see the market change in real time.

That’s honestly a pretty smart way to separate the two. The offseason gives you a little more breathing room on sports cards instead of having a player’s market potentially change while your card is sitting at PSA.
Pokémon is a completely different animal though lol. One new set, chase card, tournament result or influencer opening can send the market in a completely different direction overnight.

Haha exactly. 😂 The “what if” is basically built into modern collecting now — what if the prospect breaks out, what if the rookie gets hurt, what if the card grades a 10, what if the market suddenly shifts…
Grading is probably the part where I’ve noticed the biggest change. Once you start adding the grading fee, shipping and then potentially waiting months, you really have to think through every submission.
I’m curious where everyone thinks this goes. Do you think grading prices eventually come back down once the demand/backlog settles, or are we just looking at the new normal for the hobby?

That’s actually a really solid start! 14–16 tables already reserved gives you a good foundation, especially since you’ve got a mix of sports, TCG, comics and coins.
And having the brewery customer base is a huge advantage. If you already know there are collectors in the crowd, getting people through the door is a lot easier than starting completely from scratch.

Absolutely! Javy Lopez is one of those guys where being a Braves fan makes the cards way more fun to collect. He was such a big part of that era of Braves baseball.

Oh man, yeah! 😂 Those were definitely a different era. Varitek in Boston feels like a lifetime ago now.
It’s crazy looking back at some of those old hobby moments and realizing how much the collecting landscape has changed since then. Definitely some fun memories from that time though!

The only real decision is which color you want… and then figuring out how quickly you can fill it with cards. LOL

That’s honestly probably the healthiest way to approach it. Rip because you enjoy ripping, not because you’re expecting the next pack to pay for itself.

Honestly, same. There’s something to be said for taking the gambling out of it and just buying the card you actually want.
Pulling a monster is obviously an incredible feeling, but with singles you can target exactly what you want, find a good price, and not end up with 47 cards you never wanted along the way.

Absolutely. That’s one of the coolest parts of the hobby — you don’t have to be a huge collector or have a massive budget to eventually hit something crazy. All it takes is being in the right box at the right time.

Yeah, that’s definitely one of the biggest changes in the hobby. The ceiling on some modern cards has gotten so high that the average collector can’t realistically compete for them anymore.
But I also think there’s a flip side: those huge cards eventually have to find buyers, and that creates opportunities for collectors to pick up other cards from the same player at more reasonable levels. You don’t necessarily need the 1/1 to have a great PC.
