That sounds like an awesome family card-show day. And a card show inside a hockey rink is pretty perfect — a cool show in a cool venue. I’ll allow the pun.
A sizeable trade for a Tom Brady rookie is a pretty serious pickup too. I’d love to see what you ended up trading for it.
But honestly, my favorite part is that everyone came away with something for their own PC. Your wife finding Disney and TV cards, and your daughter grabbing historical figures plus Big Bang Theory game-worn prop cards is such a cool mix

I think that’s a really fair take. The biggest thing for me is that “the hobby is getting more expensive” and “the hobby is unhealthy” aren’t necessarily the same thing.
There are definitely pockets where prices feel completely detached from reality, especially when base cards suddenly start commanding crazy money. But like you said, there are still plenty of ways to participate without spending thousands.
You can rip Flagship, hunt $5 cards, build a team or player PC, collect vintage, chase Pokémon, grab wrestling cards, or go completely down the high-end rabbit hole if that’s your thing. There really is something for almost every budget.
I also think the global growth is a huge piece of this. The hobby isn’t just being driven by the same collectors it had 10 or 20 years ago. More people are coming in from different countries, different sports, TCGs and pop culture, and that gives the market a much broader foundation.
I’m probably a little more cautious than you are about some of the current spikes, though. We’ve seen how quickly certain cards can go from “nobody cares” to “this is the next grail” and then come crashing back down. I definitely wouldn’t want to be caught holding a mountain of a player’s cards just because everyone decided he was the next big thing for six months.
But overall? I agree with your bigger point.
The hobby feels much more diversified now than it did during the COVID boom. A correction seems inevitable somewhere along the way, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the entire hobby collapses.
And honestly, if the worst thing that happens is that some of the crazier speculative prices come back down to earth while people continue collecting what they actually enjoy… maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

Yeah, I think 12 wins is absolutely within reach for Chicago if Caleb takes that next step. That second-year jump could make a huge difference.
And as a Cowboys fan, I feel like your entire season can be summed up as: “Please, for the love of God, just stay healthy.” 😂
If Dak is cooking, the receivers stay healthy, and the defense adjusts quickly to the new coordinator, Dallas could be dangerous.

I’m with you on #18 being the big question. If he takes that next step and starts putting up legitimate MVP-caliber numbers, suddenly the Bears become a VERY different team.

That would be crazy to me too. Tailgating is basically its own sport where I’m from. I honestly think the food, hanging out, and whole pregame atmosphere are half the experience.

That’s actually a really interesting trade because on paper you gave up a little value, but I completely understand why you made it.
The 2000 Fleer Metal Brady RC in PSA 8 is the kind of card I’d rather have sitting in my collection than two Shaqs I’m already way up on. And if you’re right that the Brady is undervalued, you may have gotten yourself into something with some serious upside.
The other part I love is that you essentially turned $250-ish worth of Shaq cards into roughly $4,500 of value through appreciation, then rolled that into a Brady while still getting cash back. That’s a pretty damn good collecting journey.

That’s the correct attitude. College football gets us started, and if the game turns into a complete disaster, at least you can still say, “Yeah, but did you try these wings?”
Honestly, the food might be the most reliable player on the roster some weekends.

I am fortunate my wife is way cooler with the Hobby than most, I assume doing this stuff for a living helps with that. But I have friends who have had to take cover because they got a little too out of control on eBay lol

For me it’s really when I got back into the Hobby and I was picking up everything that looked pretty lol I still got random cards I’ll look at and be like why did I buy this? lol
